Singapore may have its flaws, but one great thing about it is that there is no lack of vegetarian food options.

I mean, just take a look at this list of Singapore’s best vegetarian restaurants for every budget. Many “omni” restaurants and cafes have vegetarian options too. Gone are the days of thumbing through 20-page menus and only being able to order an iceberg lettuce salad.

The flip side of this abundance of is that it can quickly burn a hole in your pocket.

But you needn’t spam your body with vegetarian bee hoon or McDonald’s Veggie Crunch burger every day to save money. Here are 13 other cheap and good vegetarian eateries for a meat-free meal under $10.

 

Fortune Centre (local cuisine, Chinese & Indian vegetarian food)

Herbivores and Buddhists all over Singapore already know that Fortune Centre is the go-to location for vegetarian food, mostly Buddhist Chinese style.

The building is stuffed with homely little eateries and most of them are affordable too. Don’t just stick to the ground floor, as some of the better ones are on the upper levels. Some standouts are:

Those working in the CBD have veggie options aplenty at the 200 indistinguishable salad shops around the area. But most of these will set you back more than $10.

At mostly-vegan salad shop Well Dressed Salad Bar, the sister outlet of 8 Treasures Chinese restaurant, you can build your own salad from just $5.50. You won’t get fancy ingredients but it’s simple and clean.

If you have a higher budget of >$10 you can opt for one of their plant-based protein grain bowls, deluxe salads or mains like meatless shakshuka. P.S. they serve vegan cake by the slice too!

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (Chinese vegetarian food)

Or, for a change, get lunch at Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in the Tanjong Pagar/Chinatown area. It has a cafeteria in the basement selling simple vegetarian food – brown rice cai png and a rotating selection of noodles (e.g. laksa, lor mee).

Taste-wise, it’s on the bland side, but I think it’s still a good deal because it’s relatively nutritious and healthy

Gokul Vegetarian (Indian vegetarian food, Malay & local cuisine)

I already mentioned Gokul Vegetarian earlier under Fortune Centre, but it deserves another shoutout for its original outlet in Little India, which has a much bigger menu. You can get a meal under $10 here if you order just one main (e.g. a rice set, noodles or thosai).

This is also a great place to bring vegetarian friends from out of town because you can order meatless versions of multi-ethnic dishes like curry “chicken”, char kway teow, satay and murtabak.

Xuan Miao Vegan (Chinese vegetarian food)

You know a vegan eatery must be good if non-vegetarians actually recommend it. This one came by way of a friend’s completely omnivorous mum who regularly visits Paya Lebar Square for Xuan Miao ban mian. There are also outlets at Compass One, Jurong Point and Bedok.

At $6 to $7 for a bowl, it’s not cheap for ban mian. But the servings are massive and every cubic inch of the soup is filled with fresh spinach, tofu and mushroom “ikan bilis”. The tastiest ones are the bak kut teh soup and the dry ban mian (which is served with a pesto-like sauce).

MTR – Mavalli Tiffin Room (South Indian vegetarian food)

South Indian cuisine is so veggie-centric that you generally won’t miss the meat. In my opinion, MTR Singapore serves some of the best South Indian food in town, full stop. The fact that it’s vegetarian is just a bonus.

Individual dishes, like masala dosa and rava idli, are on the pricier side ($4 to $6 each) so it’s easy to go overboard. If you’re hungry, the $8 thali (rice set meal) will fill you up without breaking the $10 limit.

Yes Natural (Chinese vegetarian food)

Geylang will never cease to amaze me. Apart from durians and illicit nocturnal activities, you can also find loads of Chinese Buddhist vegetarian eateries here, especially along the stretch near Aljunied MRT station.

In my opinion, Yes Natural is one of the best eateries here. It’s not the cheapest but the food is definitely tasty and healthy. There’s a daily selection of brown rice sets, or you can order one-person dishes like almond paste noodle salad from the menu.

A basic meal here costs about $7; more if you order zi char style. There’s also a Yes Natural bakery next door.

Greendot (Chinese vegetarian food, local cuisine)

One of the most commercially successful meatless chains around, Greendot has lots of fans who aren’t even vegetarian. They specialise in healthier (i.e. more veggies, less oil) versions of local dishes like cai png and laksa from about $7.

Greendot has heaps of outlets all around Singapore, though the quality varies a bit as it’s a franchise. Some of the better ones I’ve eaten at are One Raffles Place, Paya Lebar Square, Star Vista and Bedok Mall.

grEAT (vegan burgers under $10)

The burgers at nomVnom and VeganBurg are regarded as the best vegan burgers in Singapore, but after you add up the side/fries and drink, your bill will usually be closer to $15.

Fortunately you can get a vegan burger set for $10 at vegetarian takeaway shop grEAT at Tanjong Pagar. Their burger sets range from $8.90 to $10.90 (including fries and drink).
